pickup faq
what can I include?
Carousel's trade in service is for baby and children's clothing that's ready for reuse. That means clean items in good condition, with no stains, rips or excessive wear.
You can include baby and children's clothing and light outerwear up to size 8 (Medium) of any season.
Because of our commitment to the circular economy, we accept items in those categories of any style and material. Pieces that aren't a match for Carousel will be passed along to a charity or reuse partner.
how does scheduling work?
Pickups are done by me personally! (Hi! I'm Jessica, founder and only Carousel employee, for now.)
I'll reach out by email within about one week to coordinate a day and time that works.
Please note that pickups are during business hours.
which items earn store credit?
Carousel offers credit for in demand, in season items in good condition, just like a regular second hand children's clothing shop. The amount of credit is determined when we process your trade and is added to your account at that time.
Carousel was created as an easier, more fun way to keep more children's clothing in circulation, including the gently used items from everyday brands that have virtually no resale value. You may earn a small flat fee of about $2 - $20 in total for this type of item.
Spring / Summer styles are generally considered "in season" from January through June and Fall / Winter " from July through December.
Please note that because our baby capsules are styled with clothing made from natural fibers, we do not offer payouts for baby clothing made from other materials.
No credit will be issues for pickups with an excessive amount of unwearable items.
what if I have less than 1 bag or more than 3?
Pickups consumer a lot of resources, so I ask that you wait for a full bag to request a pickup, or to drop off items at a relove hub instead. Another option is to team up with neighbors so that I can pickup at least 1 full bag at your address!
For pickups of more than 3 bags, please add that note in the open field and I'll reach out.
when do I get my credit?
I do my best to process most trades within one week of receipt.
how is trading with Carousel different?
Carousel is on a mission to keep kidswear in circulation and out of the landfill. As a social enterprise, every business decision supports this commitment to building a circular economy that is easy to join, fun to enjoy and more impactful for our children.
Compared to other resale options, the main differences are that Carousel accepts more items and only provides credit versus cash payouts.
Compared to hand-me-downs and swaps, the ethos is similar but Carousel takes care of pairing each child with the size/style/season they need.
An estimated 85% of donations to charities that resell items wind up in landfills.
what should I do with stained clothes?
Great question, we're so glad you asked!
Any clothing that's stained, ripped or otherwise worn out can be sent for textile recycling.
In New York City:
- Pass these items to Wearable Collections. They have booths at many Greenmarkets and collection boxes in some large apartment buildings.
- Or when you schedule a pickup, you can include these items for a fee of $15 per (Fresh Direct sized) bag, and we'll take care of sending them to a recycler. See details and book here.
Anywhere in the U.S.:
- If you have other household textiles to clean out responsibly, get a Retold Recycling Bag. They ship to your home for free and each one holds up to 5 pounds.
are there other ways to trade?
Yes! You can drop off items with at one of our Relove Hub partner locations or mail them to us.
